How to Protect Trees in the Winter

It is important to keep up with tree care to ensure that your trees are healthy throughout each season. For the winter, trees need to be properly maintained to ensure a healthy life and prevent injury or tree death.

Taking Care of Older Trees

With older trees, they require different care from newly planted trees. The best time to prune your trees is during the winter, even though trees are in their inactive, dormant stage. Be sure to remove branches that are dead, and cut back any branches that are leaning over your home or are in close proximity. If during the Winter, you notice that your tree is leaning over due to ice formation, do not shake the tree branches. Make sure your tree is hydrated, fertilized and has proper mulch surrounding it before the cold Winter months. Even with adequate tree preparation, there is still a chance that pests, snow damage or salt with affect your trees health. In this case, you may need Guilford tree cutting if you are in the New Haven county area.

Preparing Newer Trees for the Bitter Winter Months

If you have planted any new trees within the past three years, then your tree needs the essential watering, fertilizer and mulch. They need regular watering for 3 years after being planted - enough watering to equal one inch of rainfall per week. New trees need enough mulch to get through the Winter season; about 3 to 6 inches. Proper mulch will help to trap moisture for the tree and keep out weed growth. Great mulch would include materials like bark or wood chips, but not anything containing plastic. Plastic will end up depriving oxygen from the roots of the tree, which will in turn end up suffocating. A young tree will benefit from using stakes to support its growth, especially during the Winter. With high winds and heavy snow, new trees need all of the support that they can get to prevent injury.

So, if you are still having tree issues even after taking the above precautions - it is important to seek a tree professional. For a reliable tree cutting service in the New Haven County area, Precision Cutting Services offers quality tree cutting services at an affordable price. We offer 24/7 emergency tree services in the area and we respond as soon as possible to any tree emergencies. Tree Removal and Landscaping in Seymour

Trees are an essential part of your yard’s health. Your landscaping in Seymour needs to be kept up with annual tree trimmings and cuttings. If your trees are not inspected for their health, they can be a danger to your home soon enough. Perform your Seymour CT tree service property inspection with a certified arborist to prevent property damage and injury.

A tree with any structural defects may not always show from the outside. This can mean that many trees in your yard can be skipped over, and have internal hazardous defects. Trees should especially be inspected near areas of heavy traffic or near buildings. Some trees may have obvious signs of damage including: leaves that are not the right color or dead/falling branches. When a tree has green foliage, it does not always mean it is healthy. It can still have dead twigs, or have an unhealthy structure.

Another way to recognize tree imperfections is looking for things like tree hangers, decay, root issues, etc. Dead trees or branches cannot bend in the wind like living trees can, making them brittle and prone to breakage or falling. These are unpredictable, and you do not know when the branches will break or when the trees will fall. If a branch is hanging, it’s already dead and is called a “hanger.” These types of branches are dangerous. Look for cracks that go into the wood of the tree. This means the tree is already defected and can fall. If you see growths on the tree or cankers where bark used to be, this tells you that the branch in that area is weak and can break. Root problems are especially dangerous since they hold up the tree. If you see a tree leaning or poor tree form, it may have structural damage from the roots. Call a certified arborist right away to take care of your Seymour CT tree removal.

Do not wait too long to maintain your trees or unexpected and complicated problems can arise. Get your trees evaluated right away if the tree danger is near a building or road. If they look like they may cause injury, it is better to be safe than sorry and get the tree inspected. Contact Precision Cutting Services today to get your trees inspected and get your property back to great health.

Summer Tree Care Advice

Summer is a time for grass to grow green, flowers to bloom in full and trees to have all of their leaves. Unfortunately, whether environmental reasons or pests, your trees may not be as healthy as you would like them to be. Here are some of the steps to take to ensure your trees look their best in Durham for the summer:

  1. Inspect Your Property - There are many factors as to why you may not see green grass or the healthiest of trees. Some of the warning signs to check your trees for are: pests, fungus, leaning trees, branches falling, etc. Most of the pests during the summer like bagworms, japanese beetles, aphids, spider mites and magnolia scale come out during the summer and are not as harmful as other pests. Contact a local arborist if you are afraid that you have an infestation of pests.
  2. Mulch - You can still mulch your trees in the summer if you were not able to in the Spring. Properly mulching trees with not too much mulch can cut down on weeds, convert soil into moisture and level out soil temperatures. There should be about 3 to 4 inches of mulch for a healthy tree.
  3. Fertilizing - A step to ensure your trees are very healthy this summer is to fertilize them with enough nutrition to ensure proper growth and fend off disease. If you live in a city, you tree will need more fertilization than in a natural area. They require more fertilizer in order to thrive in urban areas.
  4. Sufficient Watering - In the summertime, trees need a lot more water. There should be five gallons of water for every inch in trunk diameter. It is best to water trees in the morning before the sun dries them out in the afternoon heat. The mulch will reduce any water lost to weeds. Trees can also get overwatered. If there is a rainy day, do not water your trees. When the soil it soggy, the trees have enough water.
  5. Pruning - Trees that bloom in the spring may end their growth season in the summer. When this happens, it is best to prune your flowers and branches. This will lessen the total leaf surface and the amount of food made and sent to the roots will be reduced.  Trees that have flowers bloom in the mid - to - late summer, you should prune in the Winter months or early Spring. Winter pruning should be done when the coldest part of winter is over. Summer pruning should be done when the seasonal growth is completed. Limbs that are defective are more visible in the winter, so it is a good idea to prune right after the plants have lost their flowers. Pruning in the Fall months is not advised because disease is easier spread with trees in the colder months. Decay and fungi can spread spores more in the Fall than they can in any other month, and tree wounds are more difficult to heal from Fall cuts. The optimal time for pruning is in the Spring and Winter months.

So, remember to follow these steps to avoid potential tree problems in the future. You can prevent many diseases and pests by ensuring that your tree is properly cared for. Without proper water and nutrition, your tree is a ticking time bomb for pests, disease and weakening. If you are not already taking proper care of your trees, it is time to start. A well - kept tree is the best kept secret for gardeners and landscapers all around. If you want your tree to be nourished and healthy, be sure to follow these 5 steps: proper watering, mulching, fertilizing, pruning and a thorough inspection of your property. If it is already too late, and your tree is infested with pests or is dying - then you may need to call a certified arborist. A tree can look unhealthy in many ways especially with: disease, drought, pests, improperly planted trees and invasive species. These are all telltale signs that your tree should be removed.  If you  Contact Precision Cutting Services today if you need a tree removed.
